We are looking for a skilled and dedicated Maintenance Engineer to join Energicity DBA Power Leone Maintenance Team in Sierra Leone. This position will help support the growth of our Maintenance, Market Development, Operations, Construction, Engineering, and support teams to bring our electrification services to more than 100,000 customers in several African countries over the next 5 years. JOB TITLE: Maintenance Engineer

LOCATION: Sierra Leone /Liberia

JOB SUMMARY: The Maintenance Engineer will collaborate with technical specialists in the Technical Operations team to diagnose and resolve complex technical faults in solar mini-grids, ensuring optimal system reliability and performance. This role involves troubleshooting advanced technical issues, providing support to field technicians, and enhancing the team’s technical expertise. Additionally, the engineer will be responsible for training and mentoring field staff, fostering hands-on operational excellence.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direct supervision of the Technical Operation Lead, the Maintenance Engineer is expected to perform the following tasks:  

  • Level 3 Issue Resolution: Diagnose and troubleshoot the most complex technical faults that arise in our mini-grids and perform timely repairs to minimize downtime and ensure continuous electricity supply to communities. 
  • Technical Support & Supervision – Guide and assist district technicians in resolving Level 1-2 issues.
  • Technology mastery – Ensure expertise in power generation technologies, including: 
    • Power Electronics (PV panels, solar & battery inverters) 
    • Battery Energy storage (Lead-acid and LFP batteries) 
    • HVAC systems (air conditioning, extractor fans) 
    • Power distribution (primarily LV cabling) 
  • Preferred technological expertise – Victron, SMA, ATESS inverters & charge controllers. 
  • Data Monitoring and Analysis: Monitor performance metrics and collect relevant data on energy generation, consumption, and equipment status. Use this data to effectively assess the health of our systems, diagnose problems and prioritise maintenance interventions. 
  • Training & knowledge sharing: Develop & deliver training sessions and workshops to enhance field technicians’ autonomy and hands-on expertise in O&M. Share expertise with colleagues and community members to build capacity for O&M activities. 
  • Power Quality & Performance Analysis: Assess system performance, optimize energy delivery, and conduct technical audits.
  • HSE compliance:Adhere to strict safety protocols and regulatory requirements while performing maintenance tasks. Ensure compliance with industry standards and best practices to maintain the integrity and safety of Mini-grid systems.
  • Perform any additional duties assigned by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:  EDUCATION/KNOWLEDGE/TECHNICAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Educational level required: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, Power Systems, or a related field. Equivalent technical certifications with relevant experience may also be considered.

Experience: At least 3-5 years of experience in solar operations, maintenance, or technical support.

  • Technical Expertise: Strong hands-on experience with solar systems, inverters, battery storage, and distribution grids in real-world field conditions.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Proficiency in maintaining detailed maintenance logs, incident reports, and technical documentation.

Skills & Competencies:                           

  • Team Training & Mentorship: Ability to train and mentor maintenance teams, enhancing their troubleshooting skills, technical knowledge, and response efficiency for faster issue resolution.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Strong reporting, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with maintenance teams, community members, and project partners to ensure seamless operations.
  • Technical Proficiency: Skilled in Microsoft and/or Google Suites, including Word/Docs, Excel/Sheets, and PowerPoint/Slides.
  • Adaptability & Travel: Willingness to travel frequently to rural communities, both nationally and internationally, and work in challenging, resource-limited environments.
  • Continuous Learning: Openness to learning and adapting to new technologies integrated into the mini-grid portfolio.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in English; proficiency in local languages spoken in operating regions is an advantage.
