We are looking for a skilled and dedicated Civil Project Engineer to join Energicity DBA Powe Leone Sierra Leone Limited. This position will help support the growth of our market development, operations, engineering, construction, and support teams to bring our electrification services to more than 100,000 customers in several African countries over the next 5 years. JOB TITLE: Civil Project Engineer
LOCATION: Freetown, Sierra Leone
JOB SUMMARY:
The Civil Project Engineer is responsible for designing, reviewing, and supporting the delivery of civil infrastructure works for solar mini-grid projects, including foundations, drainage systems, access roads, erosion control structures, and other site development works. The role provides technical expertise throughout the project lifecycle, supporting site assessments, construction activities, quality assurance, and continuous improvement of civil engineering standards to ensure safe, cost-effective, and sustainable project delivery.
Major Responsibilities
Civil Engineering Design & Technical Development
- Design, review, and support the delivery of civil engineering works for solar mini-grid projects, ensuring designs meet project requirements, safety standards, and company engineering specifications.
- Prepare and review civil engineering drawings, technical specifications, design calculations, and Bills of Quantities (BOQs) for project implementation.
- Develop practical and cost-effective civil solutions for solar mini-grid infrastructure, including:
- Powerhouse foundations
- Equipment and transformer foundations
- Solar array equipment pads and mounting foundations
- Drainage systems
- Erosion control structures
- Access roads and site improvements
- Retaining structures
- Security fencing and site protection works
- Other supporting civil infrastructure required for project execution
Site Engineering & Technical Assessment
- Conduct site assessments and review existing site conditions to support effective civil engineering solutions.
- Evaluate geotechnical conditions, soil characteristics, drainage requirements, and environmental factors affecting project design and construction.
- Identify potential risks related to erosion, flooding, soil instability, and site accessibility, and recommend appropriate mitigation measures.
- Support site layout development, constructability reviews, and optimization of civil works to improve project efficiency and reliability.
Construction Support & Quality Assurance
- Provide technical support to construction teams and contractors during project execution.
- Review contractor submissions, construction methodologies, and workmanship to ensure compliance with approved designs, specifications, and quality standards.
- Conduct Quality Control Point (QCP) inspections during civil construction activities, including foundations, earthworks, drainage, and structural works.
- Verify locally fabricated and procured civil materials and construction works comply with approved engineering requirements.
- Identify, investigate, and resolve field engineering challenges, design deviations, and construction-related issues in a timely manner.
- Support project commissioning and handover activities by ensuring completion of civil works meets project requirements.
Civil Engineering Standards & Continuous Improvement
- Develop, maintain, and improve standard civil engineering details, drawings, specifications, and design guidelines for Energicity solar mini-grid projects.
- Establish repeatable civil engineering solutions that improve project quality, scalability, cost efficiency, and ease of construction.
- Evaluate alternative civil engineering approaches to enhance constructability, durability, and long-term maintenance of infrastructure.
- Capture lessons learned from completed projects and incorporate improvements into future engineering standards and practices.
QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/KNOWLEDGE/TECHNICAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Qualification required: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or any related field of study.
- Must be a certified civil engineer in Sierra Leone
- Basic computer literacy, including use of MS Office tools (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
Experience: Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in Civil Engineering, preferably within the renewable energy sector or a related industry.
- Proven experience working on structural, civil infrastructure, or related engineering projects.
- Experience in renewable energy projects is an advantage but not mandatory.
- Practical experience in drainage systems, erosion control, foundation design, earthworks, and site development is preferred.
