We are looking for a skilled and dedicated Metering Operations Engineer to join Energicity Sierra Leone Limited, DBA Power Leone. This position will help support the growth of our market development, operations, engineering, construction, and support teams to bring our electrification services to more than 100,000 customers in several African countries over the next 5 years. Our goal is to deliver high-quality solar mini-grids that ensure our customers have light in their homes and electricity services that help their communities thrive through:

JOB TITLE: Metering Operations Engineer

LOCATION: Sierra Leone     

JOB SUMMARY:

The Metering Operations Engineer is responsible for the end-to-end operational performance of the company’s smart metering ecosystem across the mini-grid portfolio. The role combines real-time system monitoring, advanced technical troubleshooting, field capability development, and product feedback to ensure accurate metering, reliable customer service, and efficient revenue collection.

The role acts as the operational and technical bridge between Operations, Customer Service, Field Teams, and the Meter Development Team, ensuring that metering systems are effectively deployed, continuously optimised, and scaled in line with business growth and customer satisfaction objectives.

Major Responsibilities

1. Meter Deployment & Configuration
  • Prepare, configure, and program smart meters before deployment.
  • Ensure correct installation and integration of meters with communication and backend systems.
  • Manage firmware versions, configuration standards, and deployment documentation.
  • Support site commissioning and customer connection activities involving metering systems.
2. Real-Time Metering Operations & Performance Management
  • Monitor in real time the performance and health of smart meters and communication systems across the portfolio.
  • Proactively detect meter failures, communication issues, and data inconsistencies before they impact customers.
  • Prioritize and coordinate resolution of metering incidents in collaboration with Customer Service and Field Operations teams.
  • Ensure rapid restoration of service and accuracy of customer billing data.
  • Analyze system performance data to identify recurring issues, anomalies, and improvement opportunities.
  • Manage corrective actions, including meter replacement, reconfiguration, and firmware updates.
3. Technical Support & Troubleshooting (Tier 3)
  • Provide advanced technical support for complex metering and communication issues.
  • Diagnose hardware, software, and connectivity failures across the metering ecosystem.
  • Lead root cause analysis for recurring operational issues and implement corrective measures.
  • Develop troubleshooting procedures and technical guidance for field teams and customer support.
4. Field Capability Development
  • Train, coach, and certify field technicians on meter installation, configuration, and Tier 1-2 troubleshooting.
  • Ensure adherence to installation standards and operational procedures through field audits.
  • Develop training materials and continuous learning programs for field teams.
  • Strengthen overall field capability to ensure scalability of operations.
5. Product & Innovation Collaboration
  • Collaborate closely with the Meter Development Team to improve meter hardware, firmware, and system performance.
  • Provide structured operational feedback based on field data and customer experience.
  • Participate in testing, validation, and rollout of new metering technologies and updates.
  • Support pilot deployments and innovation initiatives.
6. Operational Excellence & Organization Design
  • Contribute to the structuring and continuous improvement of the Metering Operations organization to support company growth and customer satisfaction.
  • Design and refine scalable processes, workflows, and standards for metering operations.
  • Identify operational bottlenecks and implement improvements to increase efficiency and reliability.
  • Support the Operations Manager in defining metering operational strategy and resource needs.
7. Reporting & Performance Tracking
  • Maintain accurate records of meter deployment, incidents, maintenance, and upgrades.
  • Track and report metering system performance and operational health indicators.
  • Provide insights and recommendations to improve system reliability and customer experience.

QUALIFICATIONS:  EDUCATION/KNOWLEDGE/TECHNICAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Qualifications required: Minimum qualification:

  • Degree or diploma in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Telecommunications, Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • 2–5 years of experience in metering systems, IoT devices, telecom systems, solar mini-grids, or utility operations.
  • Experience in configuring and troubleshooting connected devices or embedded systems.
  • Strong field operations and technical support experience is an advantage
  • Ability to analyze operational data and identify system issues.
  • Structured problem-solving and continuous improvement mindset.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally across operations, customer service, and engineering teams.
